May 2024 News - English Setter Club of America

The Lee Bird

The last weekend of April, as you all know, was our English Setter Club of America annual Lee Bird Event. It was started in 2016 on the idea to do something that brought club members of different interests together that love our bird dogs, honor the memory and contributions of Lee Bird and do some fundraising for the club.Saturday evening was the big dinner and social and it reset the height of the bar of a good event with, friends, food, band, activities, stake placements and raffles and auctions. It was a great success! We will have more on this to follow in a separate communication. But for now lets enjoy these kids and the smiles!

Bird Dog Foundation Life Patron Award

With my family in attendance, my friends, so many club members, field trialers from all over, and over 125 in attendance at the annual Lee Bird Event, I was honored with a Bird Dog Foundation Life Patron Award. Words can’t express how I feel, to say overwhelmed is an understatement. I want to thank my friends and family who worked behind the scenes on this and the ESCA who embraced and supported this most special and prestigious honor. I am humbled, honored and proud for this very special award plaque to be displayed in my home, at the Bird Dog Foundation and most dearly at the English Setter Club. Joe Cincotta

Pigeons are Back

Pigeon coops are open again. Tom has been training young birds and they are flying back when released. We ask that you please go easy on the birds and keep them within the guidelines/rules of fields for use. Also please be a minimalist on their use and ensure other members have access. The program is a great asset and we all missed it. Let's do our best to not drain the resource. We thank our caretaker, Tom for his daily hard work of feeding/watering the birds for member needs.

Pigeons are not a requirement to be provided by our club. It is not part of the yearly membership fee.

Pigeons help us train our dogs and we all know they are quite valuable to the process. The club does our best to provide them but there will be lulls to pigeon numbers. Here is how you can help:

  • Last year the Board passed a Motion to limit number of pigeons to two per member at a time.

  • Be courteous to fellow members by only removing pigeons needed for the immediate training needs of a single dog. When you are done, go back to get more pigeons for the next dog..

  • Guests should not be helping themselves to pigeons. Members only please.

  • Don't be the member who starts throwing unbanded birds out to exercise them. Chances are they are not ready and there is a reason why they are not banded.

  • If you would like to volunteer to help raise pigeons and you are near the grounds quite often, please talk with our caretaker.

Quad Parking Wait List

Mark Dreyfus and Tom Gille have been managing the quad parking wait list since November 2022.

  • Since 2022, twenty additional members now have a parking spot inside the quad barns.

  • We currently have 9 people on the 2024 waiting list for a spot in the barn.

  • Members are welcome to pay and park outside. Parking outside or inside is $200/annually.

  • We can add you to the waiting list for a spot in the barn, even if you choose not to keep your quad on the grounds outside.

  • If members have questions or would like to be added to the waiting list, please contact Mark Dreyfus englishsetterclub@gmail.com
