Youth Stake @ English Setter Club

Congratulations to all the youth handlers at the Joseph A. Lordi Memorial Field Trial! We think we see our 2035 President and Vice President in the picture :)

Johnny House Quail

Our johnny houses are stocked. The club purchased over 400 quail. The process is to feed them for a while so they get to feeling like they are home and slowly release some, until we have a functioning callback pen where the birds regroup on a regular basis. Hopefully you have enjoyed the excitement of finding one of these coveys on our grounds. The experience of whirling wings is fun and gives the best bird dog a run for his money on his whoa lessons! The johnny houses are functional and we look forward to hearing feedback on your experience! A few rules of the road:

  • Puppies should not be allowed to harass the coveys and take out quail.

  • There are 4 johnny houses on the grounds. The proper way to use these are to go thru and have your dog hunting forward. If your dog finds them please enjoy the moment and then move on. If not, go to the next house and hope for better luck!

  • Quads, trucks and people are not to park and claim a field for an extended length of time while training multiple dogs and splintering the coveys. They are not your private birds, they are for all members.

  • Please do not bust up a returning covey as the sun is going down for the night. If they don't make it home, they are easy prey for the many predators on our grounds.

  • The above four bullet points all have a common theme. They cause stress for our johnny house birds. If we want the program to work, please follow these guidelines.

  • We also offer training quail for purchase. They are $7.00/each.

2024 Member Survey Review

This is a follow up to the ESCA member survey. A committee was created in May to review and compile the top feedback items from that survey. The committee had an independent review of the survey results then met to discuss their findings. Below is the feedback that were the most popular topics among our members. While there are many other items that the board should digest, these are the priority items from the survey results for process improvements.

We also would request that once the Board has digested this feedback, a response to the membership be sent with forward action plans.

Respectfully submitted,

  • John Beck - ESCA Member

  • David Creagan - ESCA Board Member

  • Mark Dreyfus – Corresponding Secretary

  • Lou Onori - ESCA Member

  • David Ross - Vice President

  1. Improve communications. Overall, the past year has been our best for sharing club news, but there is more we can do:

  • Need to make sure members know how to access the member only area of the website.

  • Ensure timely posting on the monthly minutes.

  • Board should share more monthly updates regarding pending issues. What are committees working on?

  • Use clubhouse bulletin board to promote information.

  1.   Members support work credits and tracking hours vs a fee increase for yearly membership budget shortfalls. (If needed)

  • Clearly present the budget shortfalls and share information openly.

  •  Look for volunteers to help track hours of membership participation and build the program.

  • Create work hour requirements and clearly state how they can be met (volunteering to work club trials, club work days, task lists, committee participation, etc – must be agreed to and very clearly communicated, and then tracked).

  •  If no member participation, then a dues assessment is applied.

  1.  Grounds:

  • Improved paths for ATV's during wet periods. Back to wood chips? Develop plan to improve pathways (stone, chips, etc) in an environmentally friendly way to not exacerbate flooding, etc

  • Clean up the grounds a bit. Mostly hedgerows need thinning.

  • Share a yearly plan of timing for mowing and other improvement projects. This could improve volunteer participation also.

  • Assess impact of different types of vehicles on club grounds (i.e. horses vs quads vs Side x Side, and consider different storage and utilization assessments)

  1.  Allow for electronic payment of quail since the cost of quail requires exact change. (Paypal, Vemno, Zelle, etc)
